Knitwear Design

YuJei Yen (b. 1994, Taipei, Taiwan) is a New York-based textile artist and knitwear designer. Fuelled by a lifelong devotion to crochet, Yu Jei specializes in handmade fiber craftsmanship and has honed her obsession with large-scale soft sculptures. Her artistic process unfolds meticulously, loop by loop, stitch by stitch, as she crfats intimates strcuture that connects tradition and innovation. Many of her three-dimensional sculptures incorporate newly developed techniques with the element of fire. Burning the textile creates textured details and color shifts. Her handmade sculptures incorporate textured details that evoke empathy and encourage self-reflection. YuJei's work juxtaposes the refined and intricate with raw energy and emotions, pushing the traditional archetype of crochet as an art form.

After receiving an MFA from Parsons at The New School. YuJei was awarded an honor graduate from Parsons and was selected for the admission prospectus campaign. She is most notable for fabricating a custom-commissioned wearable artwork for pop star Doja Cat for Monse for the 2023 VMA red carpet. Her work was shown throughout New York City, including TAAC at Governors Island, FAPA x One Art Space, Thomas Vandyke Gallery, Neocon, Parson Benefit Gala, NYC x Design, ABC Carpet, and At the Venue Soho Flagship store.

After being recognized for her knitting/ crochet talents by Luara Kim, Creative Director of Oscar de la Renta and Monse, Yujei began working in knitwear design at Oscar de la Renta til end of 2025. YuJei is now open to freelance and commission work.
